Lawns & turf

New lawns and turf in Brisbane.

A lawn that stays green without thinking about it.

Most failed lawns in Brisbane were not failed by the turf. They were failed by what was, or was not, underneath it.

New Lawns & Turf

Most failed lawns in Brisbane were not failed by the turf. They were failed by what was, or was not, underneath it.

Even a lawn is designed. Its shape, its edges and the way it meets the paving and the beds are worked out as part of the whole garden — unique to your block — then laid by Duncan.

New under-turf soil preparation, turf supply and laying, fully programmable irrigation, and synthetic grass where it genuinely suits the site better.

The preparation is the job. Turf rolled onto compacted builder's clay looks perfect for three weeks and then thins out, because the roots have nowhere to go. New under-turf soil, graded and levelled, is the difference between a lawn and a temporary green carpet.

Irrigation gets installed programmable so the lawn is watered properly and at the right time of day, without anyone standing there with a hose. On a Brisbane summer that is the difference between a lawn that carries through February and one that does not.

Getting it right

01

Soil preparation

New under-turf soil over a properly graded base. The part of the job nobody sees and the only part that determines whether the lawn is still good next summer.

02

Levels and drainage

Grading that moves water off the lawn instead of holding it. A lawn that sits wet after Brisbane rain is a lawn that will thin and weed up.

03

Irrigation

Fully programmable, zoned to the way the sun actually hits the yard, so the shaded side is not drowned to keep the hot side alive.

04

Synthetic

Genuinely the better answer in deep shade, in tight courtyards where nothing will grow, and for people who are certain they never want to mow.

Budget

What moves the number

No two gardens are the same job, so there is no list price. What there is, is a straight answer about what drives the number — and a concept with costings in writing before you commit to anything.

01

Access and site

Whatever is already there has to come out. Removing an old lawn, and carting the spoil off site, is real cost before a single roll of turf arrives.

02

Scale and structure

Soil volume scales with area, and it is the biggest consumable in the job. Cutting the soil depth to save money is the single most common false economy in a new lawn.

03

Materials and finish

Irrigation is priced by zones and by how hard the pipework is to run. A simple rectangle is straightforward; a terraced garden with four distinct aspects is four problems.

Tell Duncan the budget you are comfortable with and the concept gets designed to it. The work can be staged — plenty of gardens start as one wall, one path or one bed.

Questions

New Lawns & Turf — answered

Real turf laid over new under-turf soil looks and feels best, and with fully programmable irrigation it stays lush without you thinking about it. Synthetic makes sense for deep shade, tight courtyards, or if you genuinely never want to mow again. Both are available.

Usually the preparation. Turf laid straight onto compacted clay or builder's fill has nowhere to root, so it looks good briefly and then thins. The fix is new under-turf soil and correct grading, not more water.

Not strictly, but a Brisbane summer will test that decision. Programmable irrigation is the difference between a lawn that carries through February and one you are replacing in autumn.

Yes. Steeper falls may want terracing or retaining first, both so the lawn is mowable and so the soil under it stays where it was put.
