Decks, Screens & Structures

The built elements are where a garden stops being a garden and starts being a room. They are also where custom fabrication stops looking like an upgrade and starts looking like the only sensible option.

Every deck, pergola and screen is drawn for the house it sits against — the laser-cut pattern included — and built by the same person who designed it, so nothing is copied and nothing gets lost between trades.

Hardwood and composite decking, pergolas and roofed outdoor areas, custom gates and fabrication, and decorative laser-cut screens in Corten and powder-coated steel.

Screens are drawn rather than ordered. A laser-cut panel is a drawing before it is a product, which means the pattern can answer the house, the planting or something the owner cares about — and it can be made once, for this garden.

Corten is used deliberately. It weathers to a stable orange-brown crust that stops there, which means the screen keeps changing for the first year or two and then holds. It suits Queensland planting and it never needs painting.

Detail

What gets built

01

Decking

Hardwood for the look and the longevity, composite where the deck sits in weather or where nobody is going to maintain it. Both are available; the choice is honest rather than pushed.

02

Pergolas and roofs

Shade structures that make a western terrace usable in February, and roofed areas that extend the season at both ends.

03

Laser-cut screens

Custom patterns cut into Corten or powder-coated steel. Privacy, shade and a feature in a single element — particularly useful on tight blocks where the neighbour's window is the problem.

04

Gates and fabrication

Custom steel work made to suit the garden rather than bought to approximately fit it.

Budget

What moves the number

No two gardens are the same job, so there is no list price. What there is, is a straight answer about what drives the number — and a concept with costings in writing before you commit to anything.

01

Access and site

Structure is the first driver. A deck at ground level is a different job to a deck on posts over a fall, which brings footings, bracing and often engineering with it.

02

Scale and structure

Timber selection is the second, and the spread is wide. Hardwood decking varies several-fold across species before anyone has cut anything.

03

Materials and finish

Custom fabrication is priced by the drawing. A laser-cut screen is a one-off: the pattern, the sheet size and the material thickness all move the number, and a simple pattern in a standard sheet is markedly cheaper than an intricate one that needs joining.

Tell Duncan the budget you are comfortable with and the concept gets designed to it. The work can be staged — plenty of gardens start as one wall, one path or one bed.

Questions

Decks, Screens & Structures — answered

Corten is a weathering steel that forms a stable oxide layer instead of continuing to corrode. It changes colour for the first year or two, then holds, and it never needs painting. The staining it can leave while weathering is worth planning for on pale paving.

Yes — that is the point of cutting it rather than buying it. The pattern is drawn for your garden, and it is not reused.

Hardwood looks better and lasts if it is maintained. Composite makes sense where the deck is fully exposed, or where nobody realistically intends to oil it every year.

It depends on height, size and how the structure attaches to the house. Duncan holds a Queensland builder licence for structural landscaping (1161156) and the approval question gets answered at design stage rather than after the posts are in.
