The process

How Duncan designs a garden.

No two gardens the same — and this is why.

Every Simply Intreeging garden since 2000 has been imagined and built by one person, Duncan Scott. Here is how a garden goes from an empty block to the finished thing — and why none of them comes out the same twice.

In his words

“I love creating really arty and unique gardens — fire pits, outdoor seating, ponds, feature stone walls, outdoor areas, bird attracting garden.”

— Duncan Scott, Simply Intreeging

01 — It starts on your block

The site walk

It starts on your block, not in an office. Duncan spends a couple of hours walking the space with you: the levels, the drainage, the aspect, where the sun lands in summer and in winter, and what stays and what goes.

Just as important is how you want to live out there — who uses the garden, when, and for what — and the budget you are comfortable with. A concept designed to the wrong number helps nobody, which is why he asks before he draws.

02 — The picture comes first

He visualises it

Duncan holds a Certificate in Commercial Art alongside his horticulture qualification, and he looks at a block the way an artist looks at a blank wall. Standing on site, he is already picturing where the stone goes, how a path should curve and where the light will fall at night.

That picture is shaped by your block and your brief rather than by the last garden he built, which is why it never comes out the same twice. He sees each garden as a piece of art, and he has never repeated a design.

03 — Down on paper, with the numbers

The concept

The idea gets sketched down on paper: a unique landscape concept with every element you discussed, written costings and an approximate time frame for completion. Stone samples and plant images are on hand, so you choose from the real material rather than a description of it.

Nothing gets built until you are happy with the paper. If the whole garden is more than you want to do at once, it is staged so the later work does not fight the earlier work.

04 — Built by the person who drew it

The build, adjusted on site

Then Duncan builds it himself. A drawing can only say so much: ground is rarely exactly what a plan expects, and the best detail often shows itself once the first stones are down.

Because the designer is on the tools, the garden can be adjusted on site — a wall nudged to catch the light, a path turned to follow the fall — without losing the intent of the concept or handing it to someone who never saw it. That is the difference between a garden that was designed and a garden that was assembled.

Since 2000

One person, start to finish

That is how every Simply Intreeging garden has been made since 2000 — one landscape designer imagining it and the same person building it, so nothing is copied and nothing is handed off.
