Design & construct

Landscape design and construct in Brisbane.

Landscape design that starts with your budget.

Custom landscape design in Brisbane and Moreton Bay from a landscape designer who builds what he draws. Duncan Scott imagines every garden and builds it himself — nothing copied, nothing handed off. Land meets art.

01 — Service

Landscape Design & Consultancy

Land meets art. Whatever style of garden you are after, the job of the design is to integrate the spaces and show an effortless flow between the hard and soft elements of your home and garden.

One person imagines the garden and the same person builds it. Nothing is copied from the last job, and nothing is handed to a crew who never met you — so the garden that ends up in the ground is the garden that was drawn, adjusted on site by the only person who knows why every line is where it is.

It starts with a couple of hours on site discussing your garden preference, your material wish list and your budget. From that a unique landscape concept is developed — every element you discussed, with costings and an approximate time frame for completion.

It gets sketched down on paper. That is a great start for people who cannot quite visualise the idea they are after, and it removes the headache of briefing unskilled contractors and the budget blowouts that follow.

Duncan holds a Certificate in Commercial Art alongside the horticulture qualification and the Queensland builder licence. That combination is the whole point of the service: the person drawing your garden can actually draw, and the person drawing it is the person who will build it.

Detail

What you actually receive

01

The site visit

A couple of hours walking the space. Levels, drainage, aspect, what stays and what goes, where the sun lands in summer and in winter, and how you want to use the garden once it is finished.

02

The concept

A unique landscape concept sketched on paper incorporating everything discussed — not a template with your address on it. No design is ever repeated.

03

The costings

Written costings and an approximate time frame for completion, so you know what the drawing means in money before anyone lifts a shovel.

04

The materials

Stone samples and plant images on hand so you choose from the real material rather than imagining it from a description.

Budget

What moves the number

No two gardens are the same job, so there is no list price. What there is, is a straight answer about what drives the number — and a concept with costings in writing before you commit to anything.

01

Access and site

Access is the first thing. A garden a bobcat can drive into costs less to build than the identical garden behind a house with a 900mm side gate, where every tonne of stone and soil goes through by wheelbarrow.

02

Scale and structure

Level changes are the second. Flat blocks are cheap to work; anything that needs retaining, cut-in steps or structural walls carries engineering and labour that a flat block never sees.

03

Materials and finish

Material choice is the third, and it is the one you control. Natural stone, travertine and hardwood sit at one end; concrete and gravel at the other. The same design can be built at very different numbers depending on what it is built from.

Tell Duncan the budget you are comfortable with and the concept gets designed to it. The work can be staged — plenty of gardens start as one wall, one path or one bed.

Questions

Landscape Design & Consultancy — answered

There is no list price, because no two gardens are the same job. What you get instead is certainty: after the on-site consultation you receive a concept with costings and an approximate time frame in writing, before you commit to anything. Tell Duncan the budget you are comfortable with and the concept is designed to it.

Because a concept designed to the wrong number wastes everybody's time. Knowing what you are comfortable investing means the drawing you receive is a garden you can actually build, not a wish list you have to dismantle.

No. Plenty of jobs start as one feature wall, one path or one planted bed. A concept plan is useful precisely because it lets you build in stages without the second stage fighting the first.

You can, though most people do not. The design service exists because the person who draws the garden is the person who builds it — that is where the detail that does not fit on paper actually lives.

No. Duncan sees the work as art and likes being different; no two gardens he has built are the same. If you want the garden from the gallery exactly as it stands, he is the wrong landscaper.
