Garden Care & Maintenance

A designed garden and a mown garden are different things. Maintenance is what keeps the first from turning into the second.

Every garden Duncan builds is different, so its care is too. Maintenance keeps each one true to its own design rather than trimming it back to a generic shape.

Pruning and shaping to the design, replacement and seasonal planting, irrigation checks and adjustments, and mulch top-ups and tidy-ups.

The distinction that matters is intent. A mowing round keeps a garden tidy. Maintaining a designed garden means pruning to the shape the design intended, replacing what has failed with what was specified, and keeping the planting in the proportion it was drawn in.

It is most valuable on the gardens Duncan designed and built, because the person maintaining it already knows what every plant in it was chosen to do.

Detail

What maintenance covers

01

Pruning to the design

Shaping that holds the proportions the garden was drawn in, rather than cutting everything back to the same height.

02

Replacement planting

What has failed gets replaced with what was specified, so the planting scheme stays the scheme.

03

Irrigation

Checks and seasonal adjustments, because a system set for September is wrong by January.

04

Mulch and tidy-ups

Top-ups that keep moisture in the beds and keep the garden reading as maintained rather than merely alive.

Budget

What moves the number

No two gardens are the same job, so there is no list price. What there is, is a straight answer about what drives the number — and a concept with costings in writing before you commit to anything.

01

Access and site

Frequency does most of it. A garden visited regularly is maintained; a garden visited twice a year is restored each time, and restoration costs more per visit.

02

Scale and structure

Size and complexity follow. Clipped and formal planting takes more time to hold than a robust native bed covering the same ground.

03

Materials and finish

How far it has gone matters on the first visit. Bringing a neglected garden back is a one-off piece of work priced separately from keeping it there.

Tell Duncan the budget you are comfortable with and the concept gets designed to it. The work can be staged — plenty of gardens start as one wall, one path or one bed.

Questions

Garden Care & Maintenance — answered

No, but that is where it works best — the person maintaining the garden already knows what everything in it was chosen to do.

Often enough that each visit is maintenance rather than rescue. The right interval depends on how formal the planting is and how hard the position is.

The focus is care of the designed elements — pruning, planting, irrigation and mulch — rather than a mowing round.

Yes. That first restoration visit gets looked at and priced on its own, separately from ongoing care.
