Paving & pathways

Crazy paving and paving in Brisbane.

Crazy paving, travertine and paths that go somewhere.

Paving & Pathways

Paving is the part of the garden you stand on, so it is the part that has to be right. A path should take you somewhere and look like it always went that way.

No two paths are laid the same. The stone, the pattern and the line a path takes are designed for your garden, not picked from a standard range, then laid by Duncan himself.

Sandstone and bluestone crazy paving, travertine pool surrounds, sleeper-and-mondo paths and stepping stones set through lawn. The material and the pattern get chosen against the house, not against a catalogue.

Crazy paving in particular is a craft job. The stone is cut to fit on site, piece by piece, and the quality of the result lives entirely in the joint widths and the way the pieces are chosen. It is slower than laying a modular paver and it looks nothing like one.

Falls, drainage and the transition back to the house get resolved at design stage. Paving that ponds, or that steps awkwardly up to a threshold, is paving that was drawn after the fact.

Detail

The options, honestly compared

01

Crazy paving

Irregular stone cut and fitted on site. The most labour in any paving option and the one that reads as custom from across the yard.

02

Travertine

The default for pool surrounds for good reason — it stays cool underfoot, it is not slippery wet, and it suits both formal and tropical planting.

03

Sleeper and mondo

Hardwood sleepers with mondo grass between them. A softer, cheaper path that suits a planted, informal garden.

04

Stepping stones

Individual stones set through lawn. The lightest touch available when you want a route without committing the whole surface to hard paving.

Budget

What moves the number

No two gardens are the same job, so there is no list price. What there is, is a straight answer about what drives the number — and a concept with costings in writing before you commit to anything.

01

Access and site

Cutting is the driver people underestimate. A rectangular terrace in a modular paver is fast. The same area in crazy paving, curved, around established planting, is several times the labour for the same square metres.

02

Scale and structure

The base is the half you never see and cannot skip. Paving laid on an inadequate base moves, and moved paving is a full rebuild rather than a repair.

03

Materials and finish

Drainage and levels matter where paving meets the house. Getting water away from the building, and getting thresholds to land flush, is detail work that costs more where the existing levels fight you.

Tell Duncan the budget you are comfortable with and the concept gets designed to it. The work can be staged — plenty of gardens start as one wall, one path or one bed.

Questions

Paving & Pathways — answered

Irregular pieces of natural stone cut to fit each other on site rather than laid to a repeating module. Every joint is bespoke, which is why it looks handmade and why it takes longer to lay than a modular paver.

Travertine is the usual answer. It stays cool underfoot in a Brisbane summer, it is not slippery when wet, and it works with both formal and tropical planting.

Not if the base is right. The preparation under the stone is the part of the job that determines whether the paving is still flat in ten years, and it is not the place to save money.

Yes, and that junction is worth designing rather than improvising — falls have to take water away from the building and thresholds should land flush rather than in an awkward step.
